If you are interested in connecting the dots on inflammation, autoimmunity, cardiovascular disease- testing your heavy metals is a must.
Do you know what your lead and mercury levels are? If you've had any of these inflammatory disorders--autoimmune issues, diabetes, memory disorders, or hormone disruption--you have to have your heavy metals tested.
As I began my career as an ND I became fascinated by how metal toxicity influences health during aging. I remember one study I came across on how treatment for lead and other heavy metals had significantly reversed the damage done by diabetes and inflammation on arteries. The treatment, which restored blood flow to people who were about to undergo surgery, resulted in a highly significant % who were able to cancel their surgeries because they did not need them anymore!
This got me thinking…. What? This is powerful medicine and more people need to be pursuing a heavy metal detox. I dove deeper into the issue and found more studies, physicians and organizations that understood the importance of this medicine.
They were encouraging a deeper exploration of testing and treatment from heavy metals in order to reduce all-cause mortality (death from any causes). One such study was done by NIH - National Institute of Health called the TACT trial where they found a significant reduction in all cause mortality (excepting death due to diabetes) when lead is removed through various treatments. Truly incredible.
Heavy metals are incredibly inflammatory. They can damage anything they come into contact with, on a cellular level that's hard to see happen.
Most people have heard of free radicals, elements that will damage your system and antioxidants which heal it instead. Metals are one of the most potent forms of free radicals; they pick away at the linings of your arteries.
I often hear from patients, "Well, it's a good thing I don't have any lead or mercury exposure!" and that is absolutely not true. Unfortunately, we all do- in varying amounts depending on our occupations and where we live.
So what should you do about heavy metals?
Step one get tested using one of these tests:
Step 3: Meet with me or an integrative medical physician to create a targeted detox and chelation plan.
