What I Did Wrong with Keto
Keto diets can be disheartening for women, especially when they witness their male co-workers or partners shedding pounds with relative ease. I first tried to lose weight with a ketogenic diet several years ago. It simply didn’t work for me, unlike my husband who managed to quickly lose twenty pounds!
It took me three attempts to get keto to work for me and to lose fat. When I look back on how I approached keto the first two times, I can see how I went wrong. Even though I was eating macros in the desired range (70/20/10), I made the mistake of eating too much fat — probably too many saturated fat calories for me (butter in my coffee, liberal amounts of bacon and cheese in my diet).
The second time I tried keto, I didn’t eat enough vegetables, and my gut microbes suffered. I didn’t mop up the toxins first. I was eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus snacks in between.
Oh, and I didn’t stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol increases belly fat. This makes sense to me because when you drink a glass of wine, your liver shifts to burning alcohol for fuel instead of burning fat in your body. This sidetracks your fat-burning mechanism and may slow down your rate of fat burning by more than half.

The third round of ketosis worked. I tested and developed my own protocol that led me to lose 20 pounds of mostly fat.
What did I do differently? I added in:
● Focused detoxification
● Circadian-based intermittent fasting
● Eating in a way that honors female hormones, including giving up alcohol
