Prebiotic Shakes (Medical Food)
This new Medical Food Grade Chocolate or Vanilla Prebiotic Shake is specifically made to support management of compromised gut function or digestive disorders, including malabsorption. These shakes are great for those with a leaky gut as it contains healthy prebiotics—like isomalto-oligosaccharides and human milk oligosaccharides that help to build the good bacteria in your gut.*
Dr. Sara is impressed by a new study showing resolution of symptoms with a special shake (“medical food”) that contains a special prebiotic, called human milk oligosaccharide, 2'-fucosyllactose (2’FL). It feeds good bacteria. In the study, patients drank the shake daily for 6 weeks and results showed improvement in irritable bowel symptoms and higher butyrate in the stool, a marker known to accelerate tight junction formation. There were more good bugs, including Bifidobacterium. She started making this shake daily and her leaky gut symptoms (bloating, gas, brain fog) are dramatically better.*
Clinical Research: In an open-label study, patients who consumed the Prebiotic shake, a certified medical food for 6 weeks had multiple benefits, including increased short-chain fatty acid production (particularly butyrate, known to modulate intestinal permeability by accelerating tight junction formation), and increased levels of commensal bacteria including F prausnitzii and Bifidobacterium. Additionally, there was a qualitative reduction in potentially pathogenic bacteria species. What I’ve noticed is that I feel better. Her eczema and carb cravings have disappeared. Her iron stores are getting filled. See if you feel better on medical food.*
Note that the FDA defines medical foods as follows: Medical foods are distinguished from the broader category of foods for special dietary use by the requirement that medical foods be intended to meet distinctive nutritional requirements of a disease or condition, used under medical supervision, and intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or condition.
Dr. Sara’s Recipe: Mix 2 Scoops of the Chocolate or Vanilla Prebiotic Shake with filtered water in a bowl, and add one tablespoon of ground flax seeds, a sliced banana, and Himalayan sea salt.

I am currently using this product and like it a lot. Last fall I was hit with diverticulitis- and used the prebiotic medical food made by Metagenics. I began to feel better. I am glad Dr Sara has the same product available on her site.
